A couple of weeks ago, William Shatner said a couple of very unflattering things about the Star Wars franchise. It didn’t take long for Carrie Fisher to step up and reply with a scathing criticism of Star Trek. Let’s see how much deeper the two actors can dig themselves in the third episode of The War of the Stars!
In the first video, released back in September, William Shatner got a question that was very obviously intended to create conflict. He claimed Star Wars was derivative of Star Trek and had the only added benefit of having ILM special effects to make it all look good. I think it was in pretty good humor, nothing too scathing and nothing too evil, just an opinion that Star Trek had a more humane approach to things. He also mentions the absence of females on Star Wars, a very valid criticism. Star Trek was, after all, known for breaking boundaries by having an African-American woman as part of the regular cast and even featured the first televised interracial kiss. Watch the clip of William Shatner below:
In the second video, recorded not long after, Carrie Fisher goes on to explain why Star Wars is the supreme franchise. “They’re not in the same league” is one of her arguments, which I have to agree with. She also mentions how Star Wars has supreme special effects, which I have to agree with, but it’s not too compelling an argument, is it? According to IMDb, the top five movies of all time are The Shawshank Redemption, The Godfather, The Godfather: Part II, The Good, the Bad and the Ugly and Pulp Fiction, none of which are known for their spectacular special effects.
There’s some strange discussion about Dick Cheney being a Star Trek fan and then something about the sale of William Shatner’s kidney stone, before she explains how Star Wars has far better merchandise than Star Trek does and how Princess Leia’s buns (I’m quite sure that she means the hair buns, not the … well … you understand where I’m going with this) were better than Spock’s ears were. Low blows, and I’m not sure how they relate to the movies and series as such. Enjoy it here:
Round Two! Fight!
Here’s the third video, the beginning of round two, I suppose, where William Shatner responds to the remarks made by “skinny little Carrie Fisher”, which I’m sure is just a cruel little jab regarding how Carrie has had a weight problem. All in all, this clip just descends into personal jabs and loses the point entirely, which I think is a little sad. I just hope Carrie Fisher can leave it at this and not release a video that begins with the phrase “Listen up, you fat, Canadian c*nt”, because that’s where I feel this is moving.
Personally, I’ve always been of the mind that Star Trek is the superior franchise, but I’m a huge Star Wars fan as well, so it’s a very difficult question. I like the original Star Wars trilogy a lot – maybe more than I liked Star Trek: The Original Series, but if I have to take the Star Wars universe as a whole (prequel trilogy, novels, video games and all) and compare it to the Star Trek universe as a whole (all the series, novels, video games and so on), then I have to say that Star Trek is the winner.
What do you think; Star Trek or Star Wars? Also, do you think we can expect Carrie Fisher to reply any time soon?
