According to one interpretation of Joss Whedon‘s words, we might be going to see Chris Evans‘s Captain America as the focal point that the story of The Avengers is interpreted through.
It’s always been a difficult task to point to one character in The Avengers and say that this is the main character. Iron-Man (Robert Downey Jr.) is definitely the best known from the latest movies and has the best known actor portraying him, but he doesn’t seem to be any more of a lead character than the others. In fact, the movie doesn’t have a single lead character, which can be a problem if you want to tell a compelling story.
That’s why Joss Whedon, in the latest issue of Entertainment Weekly, has explained:
I set out with a very simple problem: There is no reason for these people to be in the same movie. So that’s what my movie has to be about. So much of the movie takes place from Steve Rogers’ perspective, since he’s the guy who just woke up and sees this weird ass world. Everyone else has been living in it.
Personally, I think this is a pretty damned good idea. The movie would be a little too messy if it was jumping around too much, and limiting the audience perspective to a single character’s point of view is a great way of focusing us, even if that point of view takes us to visit Jeremy Renner‘s Hawkeye or Chris Hemsworth‘s Thor.
Captain America is a great character to use for this, since he’s just as new to the situation as all of us. Thor, Iron-Man, even the S.H.I.E.L.D. operatives and The Hulk; they’re all familiar with monsters, technology and many of the things they’re about to be seeing. Steve Rogers is just a kid from 1940:s Brooklyn with a very specific type of anabolic steroids running through his system.
