I’ve been looking forward to seeing Power Girl’s new costume since DC’s New 52 was first announced. Power Girl has been one of my favorite characters in comics for a good long time, but her fanservice-laden costume made it hard for me to convince my friends to give her comic a chance.
When DC’s relaunch first began, she was appearing simply as Karen Starr, but I was confident we’d see her as PG again before long. And sure enough…
Power Girl and her new look were revealed on the cover of World’s Finest #1 today. My first impression of the costume is that it made her look like a member of the Legion of Superheroes – Saturn Girl in particular – but the more I look at it, the more I notice the resemblance to Alan Moore‘s Supreme:
I’m glad the boob window is gone. It overshadowed what I think is a pretty terrific character. But this costume is missing a little of the old one’s spark. I think my biggest issue is that there’s so much white with nothing breaking it up. Many of the New 52 costumes were overdesigned, and this one has the opposite problem.
Power Girl’s occasionally worn a version of her costume with pants, most recently in the pages of Generation Lost, and sometimes abandons her cleavage window in favor of a scooped neckline.
I think the new costume, which was designed by George Perez, could use a little tweaking, but I’m willing to give it a chance. It might look better in motion, and more importantly, it’s a costume that won’t make readers afraid to read Power Girl’s stories. As long as she and Huntress are well-written, I’m sure her new look and new comic will be a success.
