In a very positive turn of events, three of the world’s largest gaming companies have pulled out of their support for SOPA.
An update to the government’s list of SOPA current list of supporters (available here as PDF) no longer lists Nintendo, Sony and Electronic Arts – even though Sony’s music divisions are still on there. There haven’t been any official announcements as to why these changes have occurred, but I see one of these two alternatives as the most probable:
- They were added to the original list without actually having been asked properly and complained about it.
- They realized the power of the Internet and what GoDaddy was going through and tried to pull their support of the bill quietly and anonymously.
These companies are still members of ESA, however, which remains on the list of SOPA supporters. I doubt they’re going to go the route of Kaspersky Labs, which are pulling out of ESA as of tomorrow to show their disagreements with SOPA.
Also, to the great dismay of many of us across the world, however, Marvel Entertainment is still on the list. We can only hope that their name will be the next to disappear from the list.
