Review: Machinarium by Amanita Design

A while back – I believe it was in April – when I was browsing the App Store on my computer, I came across this amazingly beautiful game named Machinarium. It’s a game about a robot that warms my heart with lovely scenery, music and a great story to tell.

A Scene From the Game

It is a game about a robot who has been exiled to the scrap heap. By solving puzzles you get to play the robot through the adventure of rescuing his girlfriend and saving the city from the bad guys.

Believe me when I say that every detail in this game is wonderful and well made. Every scene in this game is beautifully made; from the buildings to the other robots you interact with on your journey. Every robot has a personality and there is a lot of great humour. With flashbacks to memories from the past, you get to understand the importance of beating the bad bully robots and what you’ve been through before this.

You work your way through various scenes with different obstacles that will lead you closer to your goal. The game has the ability to draw you into it and you get the feeling of actually being there. The puzzles can be tricky at times, but never really hard enough to make you just give up. It’s all about solving puzzles, but without the puzzles taking over. I never got the feeling that there was something there to solve just for the sake of solving something. The puzzles themselves do, in fact, help tell the story that plays out in front of you.

If you prefer, this is a great game to play together with someone you like on a still evening or during a slow weekend, with a cup of tea by your side. It could even be a game to enjoy for the whole family, I believe that my siblings and I would have loved to play this when we still lived together, as we did with many other games.

Machinarium is available for PC, Mac and the iPad. It is made by Amanita Design, a small independent game developing studio with more short games to offer and another full-length game, Botanicula, on the way that I am eagerly waiting for. As for you who haven’t played Machinarium yet, you have something great to do while you wait for the next game.
