CBS Wants a Contemporary Sherlock Holmes Show

My girlfriend and I really enjoy watching Sherlock, the BBC show starring Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman. It’s a faithful interpretation of the original and is quite well adapted for the modern era.

We also kind of enjoyed Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows when we saw it a couple of days ago, and have read the collected works of Arthur Conan Doyle at least four times between us. I’ve seen the old BBC television series, played a couple of the computer games and even enjoyed a bunch of the movies. I think I speak for Sherlock Holmes enthusiasts around the globe when I say that enough is enough.

Deadline reports that CBS has ordered a pilot for the show Elementary, which they are describing as a “modern take on the cases of the pipe-smoking private eye created by Arthur Conan Doyle, with Sherlock now living in New York City”.

I can’t even begin to say what a horrible idea this is, especially after the critical success of Sherlock, which we’ve recently learned is coming back for a third season.

In a fight to the death; which of the following do you think would emerge victorious?

Definitely a horrible idea.  When, if ever, will people learn that what goes over well outside the US does not mean that it will here, especially from Great Britain/Europe. Torchwood, for example?  Eleventh Hour?  Life On Mars (although I liked these last two one), all did not do well in the US or had US versions to come that were canceled.  Sherlock works because of the casting and the writing, not easily duplicated here.

Yup, I agree with you 100%. Still, there are a couple of UK series that made it quite well in translation to the US. I’m thinking The Office, for one.

I have to be the 1 in a million billion people who is not impressed by the US version of The Office, never have been.  I would like to see a couple of episodes of the UK version to see if I like it better.
