One of my greatest enjoyments in the recent DC Comics reboot has been the Justice League. Even though I’m not entirely sold on the plot, the interaction between the characters has been golden. Naturally, I begin to wonder who would be best to cast if they were to film the series.
In my two last posts, I discussed Superman and Aquaman, meaning that the remaining members of the Justice League are Batman, Green Lantern, The Flash, Cyborg and Wonder Woman. Today, I’d like to turn my attention away from the man of the sky and the man of the water and instead look at the only female character in the current incarnation of the Justice League, Wonder Woman.
Known in her homeland as Diana of Themyscira, Diana is an interesting superhero, having grown in powers since her first appearance in All Star comics in 1941. Today, her powers have grown to match those of Superman, including flight, super speed, super-stamina and superhuman strength. She also possesses animal-like cunning skills and a natural rapport with animals, which has been presented as an actual ability to communicate with the animal kingdom. She uses her Lasso of Truth, which forces those bound by it to tell the truth, a pair of indestructible bracelets, a tiara which serves as a projectile, and, in some stories, an invisible airplane.
Arguably the most famous female superhero, Wonder Woman has been considered a feminist icon and regularly ranks among the most popular comic book characters of all time. Lynda Carter portrayed her in a television series during the late 70s, but we’ve hardly seen her since. Adrianne Palicki was cast as Wonder Woman for a television series in 2011, but the show never went any where.
So, if the choice was up to me, which three actresses would I pick as the most suitable candidates for Wonder Woman in a Justice League movie or television series?
#1. Bridget Regan
My favorite candidate for the role of Wonder Woman would be Bridget Regan, an actress that I would say is probably best known today for her portrayal of Kahlan Amnell, Mother Confessor and the last living Confessor in Legend of the Seeker and will be appearing in at least two episodes of Perception, a show that – to me, at least – looks like a poor rip-off of The Mentalist.
Bridget Regan has, in Legend of the Seeker, already proven that she’s good at portraying the a woman that is both feminine and exudes power and strength, something that rarely go together. All too often, women are portrayed as too butch if they want to be powerful or made up to be weak and cowardly if their femininity is important. This range is very important if she wants to be a convincing Wonder Woman. Also, it doesn’t hurt that she looks the part, too.
#2. Gina Carano
Gina is most famous for her career in MMA fighting, especially the match against Kelly Kobold and the various weigh-in discussions and worries that preceded it. Her first major movie role is in Haywire, and she’s rumored to be appearing in Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Sea of Monsters.
While I’m sure there will be people who argue that she doesn’t quite look the part or that she doesn’t look feminine enough, I would just like to direct you to the picture on the right. I’d say she’s a perfect fit for Wonder Woman and can really bring out the badassery that we’ve sometimes seen Wonder Woman bring out.
Movie site Collider, not too long ago, asked her about the idea of being Wonder Woman, and she said that she’d read up on the character as it had been brought up before and that she thinks it “would be fascinating to get to know that character”.
It’s going to be very interesting to follow how Haywire goes when it reaches a wider audience; it’s only being released in most of Europe this week and next.
#3. Mary Elizabeth Winstead
Moving in a completely different direction, I’d like to suggest Mary Elizabeth Winstead as my third option for Wonder Woman. Best known to many for her role as Ramona Flowers in Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, she has been in a number of other major films recently, for example the remake of The Thing, as well as upcoming movies Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter and Smashed.
She proved, in Scott Pilgrim, that she can kick ass along with the best of them, and definitely has the range of acting that would be needed to portray Diana Prince, Wonder Woman’s alias, in a convincing way.
