Wow! After the back-and-forth with Benicio Del Toro and the casting of Peter Weller and Alice Eve, I thought I was done being surprised by the upcoming Star Trek Sequel, but now they’ve gone and cast Benedict Cumberbatch in the movie!
Hot on the heels of his huge success as Sherlock Holmes in hit TV series Sherlock and his role as Peter Guillam in Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, one of the big things we’ve been looking forward to seeing Benedict in has been The Hobbit: There and Back Again, where he will be lending his voice – and some motion capture work – to both Smaug and The Necromancer.
And then we get this.
As if I hadn’t been looking forwards to the Star Trek movie enough, this casting is among the most exciting pieces of news in 2012, and I can’t wait to hear who they’re casting him as. If I were to offer suggestions, it would be that they cast him as Gary Seven, a character originally played by Robert Lansing in an episode of the Original Series, and who would make for a fantastic villain of a full-length movie.
Star Trek 2 is scheduled for release in May of 2013 and will see the entire main cast returning, including Chris Pine, Simon Pegg, Karl Urban, Anton Yelchin, John Cho, Zachary Quinto and Zoe Saldana and newcomers Alice Eve and Peter Weller.
… Now, if they would only cast him as the next Doctor Who when Matt Smith decides to step down.
Update: It seems he’ll be showing up as the main villain of the piece.
