If you have any interest in the Mortal Kombat franchise, you can’t have missed that a trailer for a Mortal Kombat movie has recently surfaced on the Internet. Only four days old, it’s already been watched more than two and a half million times.
The trailer, which is very dark and grim, depicts some of the Mortal Kombat characters that we know and love in a very different light, bringing a more realistic feel to the world. It’s almost like the effect we got when Christopher Nolan did The Dark Knight from the Batman franchise. No longer is Baraka a crazy monster with claws, he’s a plastic surgeon that went a little crazy and started operating on himself until he looked very much like the character we know from the games. Reptile also is no longer a strange monster, just a person with a case of harlequin ichthyosis – oh, and mass murder and cannibalism.
If you haven’t seen the video yet, you absolutely should before moving on. Keep an eye out for 90:s teenage heartthrob; our favorite spandex-wearing borg, Jeri Ryan.
Collider had an interview with Kevin Tancharoen, the producer of the trailer. His previous claim to fame was … well, Fame. Unfortunately, we learned that this was only a pet project of his and that no major movie is being planned. However, he hopes that major companies – Warner Brothers own the movie rights to Mortal Kombat – will pick up on the fan appreciation of this trailer and shoot a real version of this movie. In Kevin’s vision, fatalities are a major part of the movie, “Get over here” – Scorpion’s tagline – would definitely be used in the movie, Jax Briggs would be played by the actor that plays him in the trailer and that Scorpion is definitely a bad guy.
We can’t say often enough how excited we are to see this movie actually come to life in the same manner as it is described in the trailer. The last Mortal Kombat movie was – well, let’s call it a disappointment. … and, since this is CSICON, let’s just add our hope that Michael Bay will stay as far away from this project as humanly possible.
But as if it wasn’t enough that we had an absolutely amazing Mortal Kombat movie trailer, we were also given the news of a new Mortal Kombat game coming out – and it promises more blood, more violence, more brutality, cringeworthy fatalities and none of the dull camera action that distract you from the fighting you’re there to see.
Kotaku has the trailer for the new game, which brings to mind the earlier Mortal Kombat games in a way that makes me feel very happy.
